Kowhai Preschool
3.5 - 6 years

Here in the Kowhai Preschool room our day is filled with love, laughter and fun as we learn through play. Here your child will develop >> skills of inquiry, thinking and reasoning >> confidence, independence and self-help skills >> learn how to work with and alongside others >> be reflective and develop knowledge in all areas of the New Zealand Curriculum Te Whāriki.

Whether your child is transitioning between the Koru Toddler room, Kowhai Kindy or a new enrolment, our Kowhai Preschool teachers will communicate with you and/or their previous teachers about your child’s needs and strengths, and time will be taken to develop that special relationship to understand your family’s ever-changing needs, aspirations and developing interests of your child. We like to encourage family/whānau involvement here at the Fire Station – as making links with your home and the community is important to us.

A typical daily schedule in Preschool includes free play where your child can explore the core curriculum provocations and interest-inspired learning experiences that the teachers have planned, a group mat time where we share news, read stories, sing songs and play games, we have space for your child to run and explore, we also have quiet spaces where they can snuggle down with a book and enjoy some rest time. Our rolling mealtime rituals are also designed so that your child learns to eat when they are hungry and it’s a time where we can have meaningful discussions with small groups of children in a quiet and calm environment.

Kowhai Preschool can cater for up to 34 children. We aim for with a teacher/child ratio of 1 : 8 in this area.
